Obituary for Frederick Tursi

Frederick “Fred” Tursi of Edgewater Park passed away peacefully into God’s loving and eternal care Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018. Born May 17, 1930, to Joseph (deceased) and Mary (deceased), Fred lived a long and fruitful life of 88 years. He began his life in South Philadelphia, graduating from BOK Vocational School where he learned automobile repair. After high school, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War where he learned how to repair office machines. Fred moved to Edgewater Park in the early 60s and made it his home. His work-life consisted of repairing office machines with his last job being at Fort Dix repairing office machines for the Federal Government. He retired from the Federal Government at age 55, after 30 years of service. Fred enjoyed working with his hands whether it was gardening, fixing typewriters, or repairing lawnmowers, small engines, and broken furniture. He was always there to help his neighbors as he firmly believed in the commandment “Love thy neighbor as thyself”. He even touched the lives of the trash collectors and landscapers, leaving them bottles of water and soda to help them get by in the heat and humidity of summertime. Fred loved dogs and had four over his lifetime. When a neighbor’s dog passed the house, Fred would always have a treat for them. As such, dogs would stop at his house and wait for their treat, even if he wasn’t around. After the passing of his loving companion Barbara Hartman in 2005, Fred worked tirelessly with the New Jersey chapter of AARP to change the laws in New Jersey to require publishing of errors by each hospital. Fred felt this information was necessary for patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Fred was extremely proud when New Jersey passed Senate Bill 2471 in 2009 which required the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services to report certain patient safety indicators on a hospital by hospital basis and prohibits hospitals and physicians from charging a patient for certain medical errors. Fred was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph, and his sisters, Marie Britt and Dorothy D’Alessandro. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Morrone (Sam Barden), and his sons, Frederick Tursi (Eileen Leggio) and Dr. Anthony Tursi. He is also survived by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, 11 nieces and nephews, and many family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all. Family and friends are welcome to attend his graveside committal service and interment at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Holy Cross Cemetery located at 626 Baily Rd., Yeadon, PA 19050. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his honor be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123, 800-227-2345.
