Obituary for Shirley Bensel



Shirley M. (Van Sciver) Bensel of Rancocas passed away into God’s loving and eternal care Thursday, April 12, 2018, at home surrounded by her family. She was 84. Born and raised in Delanco, she lived in Rancocas most of her life. Shirley dedicated her life to her family. She was a member of the Rancocas Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was a diehard Phillies fan. In her free time, she enjoyed planting and tending to her garden. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Louis C. Bensel, who passed in 2003; her son, Louis Bensel Jr.; her sisters, Elizabeth Van Sciver, Charlotte Bensel, and Joan Ball; and her brother, Alfred “Pete” Van Sciver. Shirley is survived by her children, Joann Bensel, Brenda Bensel-Brogden (Robert) ,Cindy Bensel, Charlene Cathers (Thomas Jr.), Mark Bensel, and Craig Bensel; her grandchildren, Thomas III, Corine, Robert; and her great- grandchild, Zoey; as well as her brothers, Lewis “Buddy” Van Sciver (Muriel), and Arthur Van Sciver; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, at the Dennison Funeral Home, 214 W. Front St., Florence, where relatives and friends will be received by the family from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 17, and from 10 until 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Those attending are asked to wear their Phillies attire to honor Shirley. Interment will follow in Coopertown Cemetery in Edgewater Park. Memorial donations in Shirley’s name may be sent to Acacia Hospice, 902 Jacksonville Rd., Burlington, NJ 08016. To offer condolences to the family please visit the website below.
